On June 1 and 2 2022, was held the e-Health 2022 conference. The e-Health conference is where the big discussions on digital health take place. Since its inception in 2000, e-Health remains a key epicentre for digital health discussion and debate in Canada, attracting more than 1,500 healthcare professionals. It is the ideal place to share ideas, expertise, successes and challenges with peers, nationally and internationally. The 2022 conference was entirely virtual, expanding the reach of e-Health to a broader audience while adapting to the new normal of a post-pandemic world.
Akinox had the opportunity to present a conference entitled "Building the Apps That Beat TikTok, Facebook and Instagram" on the topic of vaccine passports. We illustrated how a person-centric vaccine credentialing solution became one of the top Canadian downloads and facilitated social maintenance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During this virtual talk, we explained how our unique solution was developed, tested, and implemented within weeks using an agile approach. The solution was the first of the type to be implemented in Canada and became the largest issuer of credentials using the open SMART Health Card (for example, more than 5.7 million compared to less than 1 million for other issuers by June 2021, a little over two months upon release). The applications were downloaded over 7M times through the Apple App Store, surpassing TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram for several weeks following their release.
The solution performed over 40M validations every month in Canada and has issued over 12M credentials so far. This has enabled people to resume a somewhat normal life – returning to their workplace, sporting facilities, restaurants, hotels, etc – outside of lockdowns, thereby contributing to the maintenance of their mental and physical health, as their overall social, emotional, and financial well-being.
With COVID-19 variants surfacing amongst Canadians’ prevailing desire for ‘normalcy’, the need for such technologies is pressing. A testament to this is the fact that our solution was awarded "eHealth solution of the year". With our participation in various high-profile forums in Canada and the US and the adoption of the technology in North America and beyond, we are considered pioneers in this realm. We have learned tremendously from this experience and, building upon those lessons, are ready to deliver the benefits of our comprehensive solution in other regions and settings.
